The Recession Project :: Curran Family :: Utah Family Photographer

Family number two in my project.  Jahn had contacted me through my craigslist ad wanting some family pictures … which he hasn’t had for 3 years.  Jahn has two kids a son and a daughter.  They are two sweet and beautiful kids and smart too!  I didn’t think they could fold my 4ft x 3ft reflector up but they were keen to the task and tackled it in short order.

Jahn is a single parent divorcee.  He has been in the banking industry for most of his career.  From managing branches, to creating marketing plans, advising on financial investments, to giving financial advise.  He has worked with both local banks to world wide banks.  Of course with the collapse of the economy the banking industry has been trying to recoup money, and a easy way to save money is to trim off employee numbers.  This is where Jahn found himself a year ago.

Since then he has been looking for work with no success, even picking up janitorial jobs just to make ends meet.  He’s told me that he has now depleted his savings and will this month not be able to make payments on his house, utilities, etc.  He said that not being able to pay his bills is one of the harder things for him.  He takes pride in not being late on his payments, and being efficient with his money.

He’s been able to supplement his food with his garden, baking his own bread, and he has a peach tree ready to burst.

Jahn has enjoyed some of his time off, he’s been able to learn new skills he said.  From painting, to framing, and some woodworking.

He along with many other Utahans has been struggling getting full time employment.  Its not a lack of trying, having a great eduction, or years of experience.  The jobs that suit his skills are just not there anymore.
