B&W Project :: Salt Lake City Black & White

I miss the dark room. I miss film, but most of all I miss black and white. Since I’ve “gone digital” my color palette has exploded. Its fun to play with so much color; subdued colors, vibrant colors, selective color, there is so much you can do with a color photo. With all this excitement over color I’ve forgotten neglected black and white. Wait! You say, you have some images in black and white. Yes … some. That’s the problem its so few. I’ve been thinking about this for at least the last two months and I’ve made up my mind. Black and white is back in.

Truth be told … when I do shoot I tend to shoot in my camera body in black and white, since I shoot in RAW getting them back to color is no problem. So why do I shoot in B&W in my camera? To see shapes, form, and negative space. Its less distracting then seeing it in color.

I’m also focusing on a few rules of thumb this year as well:

The Golden Mean.
The Art of Imperfection
The Art of Destruction
The Art of Simplicity

So why all this craziness? I want to get back to the root of why I love photography so much, why I wanted to pick up the camera so bad, why I spent hundreds and thousands of dollars on dark room supplies, chemicals, and now digital photography supplies.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love color and will still process in color … I’m only focusing on B&W. The right tool for the right job and all that.

I love light, I love shape, I love form. Here’s to 2010!

Utah Commercial Photography – Frames Galore!

StyleCraft is looking to have their website frame gallery refreshed with their new lines of framed art. I was able to pick up this business after a few meetings and providing them some proofs of concept. Now shooting framed art isn’t as easy as you would think. The flat glass leaves much to be desired, and you have to be able to hide your own reflection from the picture as well!

Kimberly and I have been wanting to work with each other for a while now, but because of extenuating circumstances we have just been missing each other. Finally our schedules matched up and we were able to do something! Kimberly is a joy to work with and I look forward to working with her in the future.

Sarinda Jones – Reflective Art Studio – Glass Artist – Utah Art Photographer

I met Sarinda Jones at her booth at the farmers market. After talking with her for a while she learned that I did photography and she needed some of her art photographed for her website, PR pushes, and publications. I’m always looking to push myself photographically, and this was a great chance to try shooting art photography on art pieces. She let me have a week with these pieces while I tried out new lighting designs and variations on her art.
